This tour is a must-do. I highly recommend it.
Setting out from the picturesque village of Vestmanna was delightful, and spending time viewing the sea stacks and achingingly beautiful cliffs was awe-inspiring. There were birds in abundance to see flying among the cliff-tops and down to the water, from puffins and gillemots, to gannets and skuas. A bird watcher’s dream!
The boat was comfortable and very safe – plenty of space both up top, and down in the warmer cabin.
The weather turned when we were about to dock in Mykines and, despite three attempts, we were unable to do so because the swells were too big – and getting bigger with each attempt. While we were disappointed that we did not make it onto Mykines Island, we very much appreciated the captain’s focus on safety. There was also the risk that we’d not be able to get off the island if we were to able to dock eventually, so all is well that ends well. Safety first!
We were lucky, then, to have an extended tour of Vagar Island and see the ‘Lake Above the Ocean’ and its waterfall from the ocean, the Witch’s Finger up close, incredible towering cliffs, and a cove with curious grey seals coming to meet us at the boat.
Thank you to our captain and first mate for a safe, interesting, and enjoyable trip!
