Join an awe-inspiring day tour to the puffin island Mykines. This is your opportunity to experience a wealth of puffins and unbelievable nature on the most westernly island in the Faroe Islands inhabited mainly by puffins and sheep. Oh, and then there are 14 people living here permanently.

You will be picked up at your Tórshavn hotel in the morning. Now, you will start make your way west on this small group day trip to the main summer attraction in the Faroe Islands. The drive out of Tórshavn is scenic and your tour guide will note all points of interest while you move smoothly through the mountainous scenery along the route Oyggjarvegur.

Here you will experience the breathtaking Norðradalsskarð pass with the wide valley and the view of Koltur island. Further down the road, you will drive close to the only prison in the Faroe Islands lying in tranquil surroundings and with a panoramic view of the Kaldbaksfjørður fjord.

Once you reach Sørvágur, you will be handed your boat ticket that is included in this tour. The ticket will secure you a seat on the boat to Mykines. After a 45 minutes boat ride, you will reach your main attraction of the day: Mykines!

Mykines is pure beauty and nature at its best. Here in Mykines your local tour guide will greet you once you have taken the stairs from the ferry port up to the village. Mykines will introduce you to the unbelievable landscape that is home to the greatest puffin colony of the archipelago. Now you are marooned for 6 hours on Mykines island where you will explore the untouched nature and get really close to puffins.

The hike from the old village with turf houses to the westernmost tip of Mykineshólmur islet and the lighthouse there is extraordinary. It feels like walking to the end of the world. In these unspoiled surroundings, lunch and spring water will be provided for you.

Rolling hills and steep cliffs has deservedly become a favourite site to visit during summer. Enjoy tremendous views of the ocean to the west and other islands to the east as you walk across the island and the magnificent bird life. Thousand of cute puffins nestle in burrows here in the cliff-tops during the summer months.

When back in the only village here after the puffin hike, you will relax for a moment. Soak in the remoteness of this unique island.

Next, your tour guide will take you back to the ferry port at the end of your Mykines experience. The ferry will depart from Mykines at 17:05 pm and you will return to Sørvágur at 18:00 pm and then you will drive from Sørvágur and back to Tórshavn where you will arrive in the evening. You will be at your accommodation in Tórshavn at 19:00 pm.

Tours to Mykines are arranged each summer until late August. This is the only time of year when you can get to this small paradise on earth.

Our guide was a local man that spent part of his childhood living in the lighthouse (his father was the last lighthouse keeper), so we were provided with a lot of stories. He knew where to start and end our tour in order to avoid the rest of the tourists in the island and get the best views.

This was a fantastic first day trip in the Faroe islands. We booked early in our trip in case the weather didn’t cooperate which we hear happens. We experienced rain, wind, snow and lots of sun … all on the same day at the end of May. Luckily, we layered clothing appropriately. The guides were exceptional and prompt in pick up. The people on the Mykines are so welcoming and lovely. The views are absolutely spectacular. The ferry boat captain is highly skilled bringing us into the “dock” with maximum efficiency in rough waters. I was very impressed with the whole tour. Highly recommend to anyone that doesn’t have any mobility issues. The up and down climbs on the Mykines are not for the faint of heart or body. The wind can be vicious. The hills steep. Lots of up and down traversing through the Puffin breeding ground to the Lighthouse. If you have any mobility issues, I would pass on this tour. Likewise, anyone with weak ankles might want to make sure they have sturdy hiking boots. The terrain can be unstable and one needs to exercise caution to avoid a stumble or fall.

This was absolutely fantastic! The guides are very nice and knowledgeable. They told us many stories and fact about Faroe Islands. And the foods provided to us was very good. Highly recommended!

An amazing trip loved how you really knew the right spots to be. Great friendly and knowledgeable guides. Also loved the salmon lox lunch and dinner with the locals.
The one thing I think maybe you could add is a little more scientific information about the puffins. i.e. what the eat, their migration habits, nesting habits, etc.
    But everything else was amazing!

We had a super great day! According to the guides, it was a special day with this many puffins. We didn’t expect to come so close to them. We were guided by two brothers who had a lot of fun during the tour and told us great stories. Thanks a lot!
