Experience some of the most beautiful attractions in Vagar island starting in a kayak. When renting your very own kayak, you have the chance to take an extraordinary route to see the famous sights around Bøsdalafossur waterfall. Land the kayak at the end of the lake and go ashore to see the unbelievable views.
The lake Leitisvatn is the largest lake in the Faroe Islands stretching 6 km from one end to the other. The lake is just beside Vagar airport. Your kayak adventure will start from some old turf-roofed stone houses near the village Miðvágur. Exact meeting point is sent to you upon booking the experience. A member of staff will hand you your kayak and a spray skirt. You will also get instructions if you are a novice kayaker.
The ride from the stone houses to the end of the lake towards the ocean and Bøsdalafossur waterfall takes one hour or so. Kayaking to the lake's edge towards the North Atlantic Ocean is an epic paddling experience.
You can go ashore and relax while you experience the waterfall Bøsdalafossur and the free-standing Geituskorardrangur rock wall. Bøsdalafossur plunges into the fresh salty ocean and very near lies Trælanípa with the iconic view of the lake Leitisvatn hanging over the ocean.
A stop at Bøsdalafossur is a must for those travelling to the Faroe Islands. Besides taking in the sights, you will have a unique chance to immerse yourself in the untouched nature in your own rented kayak.
You will paddle in the safest kayak on the market and in the most easy to use kayak. When on the lake, you can enjoy the remoteness and silence in the middle of unspoiled landscapes. Renting a kayak on the lake Leitisvatn is for those seeking something extra on their vacation in the Faroe Islands.
Starting from the stone houses near Miðvágur, you can paddle as you like in your kayak. Leitisvatn is a freshwater lake that you most likely have seen on many pictures of the Faroe Islands.
Discover some of the wonders in the Faroe Islands by renting a kayak that will bring you to the unique seaside attractions on Vágar island. Check availability by choosing a date.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1) Can this trip be done without experience? Yes, the tour can be done as an inexperienced kayaker. These kayaks are super easy to paddle.
2) What would you recommend to wear? Dress in layers as it can be cold. Wear something warm such as a windproof jacket. You can then take off the jacket if it gets too warm when on the tour.
3) Is it possible to bring a photo camera and keep it dry? Yes, there is room in the kayak for the camera. You can rent a waterproof bag at the kayaking site for free just for safety.
4) How big are the dry sacks we are able to use?
Dry bags are only for small items like cell phones.
5)What's the distance you travel? It is basically up to you how far you want to go. You can paddle all the way to Bøsdalafossur Waterfall and go on land if you like. Just cruising along the waterfront is also enjoyable.
6) I wondered the general distance paddled on the kayaking tour of Lake Leitisvatn?
If you paddle from the starting point to Bøsdalafossur Waterfall and back again, the total distance is 4.5 km (2.8 miles)
7) We want to park our rented car. Is there any parking around?
Yes, you can park for free right next to the starting point. This is where you will find the small stone house along the lake where the kayaking instructor will greet you.
8) Is there an upper weight limit for those renting a kayak? Yes, 100 kg is the maximum weight for the kayaks in order for traveller to get a good experience.
9) Can you stop with your kayak at the end and take a short walk to see the waterfall. Yes, you are welcome to do so. It is easy to get on land and you have plenty of time exploring the coastline at the end of the lake where the waterfall drops into the ocean.

We had a great morning kayaking on the lake above the ocean. We had originally booked for the day before but Michael contacted us to say the weather would be bad and rearranged the experience for us. I’m so glad he did as we had a beautiful day for kayaking with sunshine and very little wind.
The equipment and kayaks were in good condition. Michael gave us a clear explanation of what to do and was really friendly and welcoming.
We’d recommend this kayaking tour for people with and without previous experience. It is a lovely way to enjoy the lake and see the cliffs.

Michael was amazing! He reached out to us to ask if we wanted to reschedule for a better weather time slot which made a world of difference and actually ended up being at the end of the day which gave us some spectacular views. The experience was great and he entertained us with stories while we paddled, showed us all his favorite spots along the cliffs and took us into areas of the cliffside we wouldn’t have known how to reach on our own. This was one of our favorite things we did in the Faroes and I would highly recommend it!

Highly recommend this – it was a lot of fun and a change up from hiking elsewhere in the Faroes. The kayaks were perfect and we were given very good advice on everything from where to get out for photos to the benefits of eating Rose Root (which we tracked down and shared with the owner – an ex police officer and also a talented sculptor!!!). An excellent host and kayaking on the lake was fantastic … though of course you need the right weather.

While the Kayaking was great and the scenery was as expected, the best part of the experience was our guide Michael. He ensured we understood the safety of kayaking, the route we would be taking and shared information about the lake and surrounding area. Michael was a wealth of knowledge and we were appreciative of his sharing of perspective and culture. We also got to go on a bonus hike at the end of the lake before heading back. Would absolutely recommend!

We had a most wonderful time. Our host, Michael was very kind and gracious. He actually contacted us to offer to change the time of our tour on short notice so that we could time our experience away from the anticipated rain showers later in the day. We were so glad that Michael gave us this option, which made a world of difference for our experience. Michael gave us all the equipment and more for our group and gave us all the time we need for our kayak trip and hike to the waterfall. While we did not opt for the private guided tour, Michael gave us detailed explanation on where to kayak, where to dock to hike and how to return. We enjoyed the trip so much that we took more time than initially allotted to enjoy our trip. We are grateful for the flexibility and gift of time. We were the only group kayaking that day and we had the lak entirely to ourselves. IT was simply majestic. The waters were calm and easy to kayak. Took us about 50 minutes to reach the beach for hike to the waterfall. Wear hiking boots if you can . IT started to rain as we kayaked back. We were very happy to have nice weather right prior as the photos we took were simply breathe taking. Would highly recommend this experience and you simply can’t beat the price for this adventure. 5 star service all the way.

I had so much fun kayaking the lake. I happened to be by myself the entire time but did not feel unsafe. Michael was very kind and helpful in guiding me with the kayak and I had no trouble navigating or getting on/off by myself. The views at the end of the waterfall and sea stacks were incredible. My only regret was not being strong enough to put the kayak back into the shed for him.

Brilliant experience.
Michael was great at instructions and rearranged the kayak rental for less windy time for me, so ended up being a lovely evening paddle on a calm lake ending in incredible views.
Would highly recommend.
Also, great value for money considering the hiking fee for walking up to the waterfall is 200DKK.
If had had more time on Vagar would definitely do it again.

Our trip had to be rescheduled due to the weather, but the new timeslot meant we were dry the whole time, even with some sunshine! Quite fortuitous for October in Faroes. Michael is a truly lovely guide. The wind was quite challenging during the first half of the kayaking and I was struggling a bit, but it was OK for me to go at a slightly slower pace. At the end of the lake we hiked to the most incredible views (including a little barefoot wade through some water since it had been raining so so much the previous days). All absolutely fantastic. Highly recommended if you’re up for a more active activity in the beauty and serenity of Vágar.

Michael did an amazing job! He felt like a friend who came with us instead of a guide. We felt safe, privileged and welcome. It was fantastic.
The only thing we struggled with was the directions (it makes sense in hindsight of course) but the directions said “”by the stone houses with grass roofs on the shore IN the town of Miðvágur”” or something like that. So we unfortunately we’re looking for said houses near the church as maybe we were gonna shuttle over or something. Like I said in hindsight of course it was AT the lakes shore and not the port. If that makes any sense. Haha. However, even with that mistake on our part it was and absolutely incredible time and we don’t want to share it with anyone! We want to keep it all to ourselves!

We have really enjoyed our Kayak activity on the lake. It has been a different and fun way to cross it. Once you reach the other end of the lake, it is possible to leave the kayaks parked and reach the famous views of the “lake over the ocean”.
The problem is that if it is windy it is difficult to handle the kayak, although not impossible. In addition, those responsible for the activity are very friendly. We would definitely repeat it again! 🙂

Our guide showed us how to Kayak and was very helpful giving us tips whenever we needed it! The weather was fantastic. Clear and sunny! A beginner may find it hard but soon he will find the right pace. The View is absolutely stunning! You can stop and stare the beauty of this place at any time! I will definitely recommend it! It’s not only a good exercise for the body but also a great sightseeing experience!

Kayaking on the lake above the ocean was an awesome experience! We had mostly clear & sunny weather, but the kayaks were stable even in the rain & wind. Michael explained everything perfectly so there was no confusion about where to go or how to handle the equipment. Hiking in the middle of the excursion was nice too!
