The weather was rather disappointing at first, with fog hanging over Tórshavn as we set out on the inspiring “Lake above the Ocean” tour. It didn’t seem to clear as we began our one-hour hike from Miðvágur to Trælanípa and even our guide was unsure whether we’d have any views at all. But fortunately, as we approached our destination, the sky cleared and the sun broke through, lifting our spirits and revealing the landscape’s beauty.
Normally I don’t walk much and my fitness level is quite low, but the hike was manageable — gentle climbs, small hills, and a few little streams along the way. Thanks to the well-paced itinerary, we had time for short breaks, which I really appreciated. The final ascent to the cliff was steeper, and I definitely needed more pauses, but the view at the top made it all worthwhile. It was absolutely breathtaking.
The trail was muddy and slippery, yet our guide was incredibly attentive and helped us across wet rocks and tricky sections, making sure everyone felt safe. Standing atop Trælanípa, I found myself in the calmest, most peaceful place I’ve ever experienced. It was deeply relaxing and truly unforgettable.
Every stop on the tour was remarkable, but this cliff was undoubtedly the highlight of my Faroe Islands adventure. This tour is highly recommended! Thank you!

Our guide Hans was very friendly. I was traveling with two kids 5 years/ 12 years old. He was very patient as the kids hiked to see the spectacular views . He took us to a nice place for a quick lunch break. From the pick up to drop off , i really enjoyed my time with Hans. Can highly recommend his company. It was very nice to spend a day with him. Thanks Hans!l for offering to pick up little son when he was getting tired from the hike.

This was one of our favorite experiences on our trip! The hike is long and you should be in fairly good shape to take it. The lake and waterfalls are spectacular when you get there! It is very inspiring. Our guide was Hjesta ( I’m sure that is incorrect spelling), but he was a fantastic guide! He took us to so many cool and beautiful places. You can tell he loves his country. We enjoyed spending the day with him! Also, a sack lunch was provided, which we were not expecting, and that was very nice. We needed some sustenance after that hike! I would highly recommend the 6 hour tour to the lake above the ocean – you will not regret it!

Do this tour! We saw amazing views and learnt heaps from our guide. The hike out there is about an hour but it is mostly flat and easily doable by most able-bodied people. The traditional village was quaint and picturesque, and the final waterfall viewing spot was also stunning. It’s impossible to take a bad photo here! Go to the Faroe Islands and do this tour!

We had terrible terrible weather (rain and hail) on the day of our tour, even though we came in August which is supposed to be prime time. However our tour guide, Jens, was undaunted and we went on most of the hike. He was full of great information about the Faroes and he enjoyed seeing the sheep and the highland cows we encountered along the road. We saw amazing things and took amazing pictures. However I recommend wearing shoes or preferably boots with flexible soles and really good grips, and waterproof (not water resistant outerwear.. I slipped a few times in the mud! This is not a difficult hike in good weather probably but it will be a good brisk walk! Also a sweater and hat to wear underneath. You can take them off if you don’t need them.
