Step into a thousand years of Faroese history on one of the most meaningful walks in the North Atlantic. Few paths carry as much beneath their surface as the path between Tórshavn and Kirkjubøur. This path is trodden by farmers, priests and pilgrims making their way to the medieval seat of the archipelago’s bishopric. On this guided hike, you follow in their footsteps through open farmland, along a high grassy ridge, and down into one of the most storied villages in these islands.

Meeting point is in downtown Tórshavn close to Tórshavn Cathedral. The hike begins with a short drive to the southern edge of Tórshavn, where the path leaves the city behind and the landscape opens up. The ascent is gradual and rewarding, climbing to a ridge around 260 metres (853 feet) above sea level. From here the views are among the finest you will find on Streymoy Island. Tórshavn spread below you, the waters of Skopunarfjørður Fjord glittering in the distance, and the shapes of neighbouring islands rising from the sea on clear days. It is the kind of panorama that invites you to stop, breathe, and simply take it in.

Descending toward the coast, the trail winds through quiet farmland punctuated by the distinctive silhouettes of turf-roofed houses. People live in all these houses.

Kirkjubøur itself is the destination every step has been building toward. Sheltered beneath the slopes of Kirkjubøreyn, this small village was the ecclesiastical centre of the Faroe Islands throughout the Middle Ages, and its monuments reflect that weight of history.

The ruins of Magnus Cathedral stand as one of the finest examples of medieval stone architecture in the entire North Atlantic. Beside it, Saint Olav’s Church — still in active use after more than 800 years — offers a rare sense of unbroken continuity. And just steps away, the timber farmhouse known as Kirkjubøargarður has been home to the same family for 17 generations, and is widely regarded as one of the oldest continuously inhabited wooden buildings in the world.

Your guide will bring these sites to life with the stories, legends and historical layers that make Kirkjubøur far more than a scenic stop. After time to explore the village at your own pace, you return to Tórshavn by local bus, leaving with the particular satisfaction of a walk that felt genuinely earned.
