Escape the crowds and experience the raw, untamed beauty of the Faroe Islands on this guided hike to a hidden waterfall and black sand beach beyond Lake Fjallavatn. Tucked away in a remote location on Vágar Island, Lake Fjallavatn is the second-largest lake in the archipelago and one of its most remote locations – far from the usual tourist routes. Surrounded by mountains, this secluded valley offers a rare sense of isolation, where – unusually for the Faroes – the ocean remains out of sight.
The hike begins along a peaceful trail that follows the lakeshore. As you walk, take in the stillness and sweeping views of this untouched landscape. At the far end of the lake lies Norð á Munna, a narrow strip of land separating Lake Fjallavatn from the Atlantic Ocean. Here, the river Reipsá flows from the lake, cutting across the land before cascading dramatically into the sea as the beautiful Reipsáfossur Waterfall.
Beyond the waterfall, a hidden black sand beach awaits, offering sweeping views towards Víkar – an abandoned village perched in this remote coastal setting. This lesser-known spot is one of the Faroes’ true hidden gems. Here, we’ll pause to enjoy a packed lunch while your guide shares the story of Víkar and the people who once lived there.
Learn why this isolated village was established in 1833 and abandoned just 77 years later. Discover the significance of the black sand beach to the villagers and take in the striking scenery, including the waterfall framed by a dramatic, pyramid-shaped cliff rising behind it.
The full hike covers approximately 13 kilometres and takes around seven hours round-trip. While technically easy, the distance and terrain require a good level of fitness. Expect a few river crossings and wet sections – sturdy hiking boots are essential, and in some cases, you may need to remove them to cross safely.
This is a true off-the-beaten-path adventure – perfect for those seeking solitude, history, and some of the Faroes’ most breathtaking hidden landscapes. Check availability by choosing a date.
