Come and take your own picture of the most spectacular lighthouse in the Faroe Islands in astonishing surroundings. This is your chance to experience Kalsoy island.

On this tour you will first be picked up wherever you want in Tórshavn at 08:15. From Tórshavn, you will head to Klaksvík, the second biggest town in the Faroe Islands very much anchored in its fishing tradition. From Klaksvík you will take the ferry to Syðradalur on Kalsoy island. You will wait in the ferry line for half an hour in Klaksvík.

Arriving to Kalsoy island you will make your way north on the only road on this sparsely populated island. Only 90 inhabitants dwell here year round, but the island is well served by infrastructure featuring several road tunnels connecting the four villages on this island.

You will drive north to Mikladalur to visit the Seal Woman, a statue by the shore of the village Mikladalur. The statue represent the seal woman who, according to ancient Faroese legend, was forced to live with a human, but who all the time was longing to get back to live in the sea as a seal.

By the northern most village on the island, Trøllanes, you will go off-road and head for the lighthouse on foot. This is a medium mountain hike and the first part of the trail requires some effort. There is no path, but you are walking on grass and stony surface. It is highly recommended to follow your tour guide and do not undertake the hike on your own unless you are an experienced hiker.

On your way up to the lighthouse you are likely to pass sheep, mountain dwelling birds and maybe you can spot occasional hare. Underneath you is the Atlantic ocean populated by seals and other sea mammals.

The view by the lighthouse is absolute breathtaking and entirely unique. To the south you see the vertical side of the 537 m high mountain Borgarin. To the west you see Eysturoy and to the east you see the north side of Kunoy island and Viðoy island.

At the end of the day, you will head back to Tórshavn. You will first take the ferry from the harbour in Kalsoy island to Klaksvík. When back in Klaksvík, your tour guide will take you back for Tórshavn which is an hours drive away from Klaksvík.

Randi was warm, organized and knowledgeable. She emailed me ahead of the tour to confirm the pickup schedule and recommended us to dress in layers, which was helpful during the vigorous hike. On the day of the tour, she picked me up promptly and drove three guests via a few undersea tunnels. We were lucky to visit Kalsoy with no rain or wind. The hike was vigorous, but the sight was tremendous. Randi helped us to catch the ferry in time to return to the hotels around 4 pm, just in time to rest a bit before dinner. Randi works as a literature and Spanish teacher and converse fluently in English and French too. She has travelled extensively to Latin America. It was such a pleasure touring the Faroe Islands with Randi.

We loved our day with Jógvan! He was a wonderful guide; very informative and insightful. He taught us everything from Faroe Islands history, to politics, to geography. We really enjoyed just chatting with him.

The hiking was very nice. It was more of a medium hike, with a few tougher uphill parts, but nothing too challenging. (I actually enjoyed this hike more than the Lake Sørvágsvatn hike. I liked the variety in this scenery, and how you could walk around a hill to get a different view.)

Overall, it was a great experience, with some very beautiful scenery. Jógvan is great!

Excellent tour – our guide was great and was very friendly and told us a lot about the Faroe Islands. We were lucky to have great weather on the day and it was well worth the money.

The tour with Randi was a great experience. She has good knowledge of the area and told stories about the local culture and the Seal Woman. She also played music on the drive related to the Seal Woman, explaining the story as we headed there. The hike was an enjoyable experience, and even though it was not possible to see anything at the end due to the cloudy weather, she made the walk interesting by providing knowledge about the local birds and we stopped along the way to hear and see the different wildlife. Kalsoy was a memorable part of the visit to the Faroe Islands and the tour is recommended!
