Get Around with Elsa Maria

Hello, we had again a great day with Elsa Maria. It was our second stay on the spectular Islands. This time we explored Sandoy Island – through the new tunnel and than really the whole Island with a very tasty lunch with very friendly hosts.
We have learnt a lot of historie and heard Stories about living. Thank you and we will be back😀

This was a fantastic day tour of Sandoy. Our guide, Jens Petur, was so knowledgeable about Faroese history, culture, economics, religion, etc. and really made it all come alive as we visited ancient Viking settlements and current villages throughout the island. A highlight for our family was the heimablidni. Our hostess, Helga and her husband, warmly invited us into their home where we were treated to a delicious traditional Faroese meal.
On this tour, be prepared to see beautiful ocean vistas, sand beaches, ancient ruins and tidy villages. It is a 5+ star tour!

My husband and I went on the Sandoy Full Day tour on June 11, and it was one of the highlights of our trip to the Faroe Islands. We highly recommend this trip to Sandoy Island, as it gives you a comprehensive view of the island. Our guide, Jens Petur, was a many-generational Faroe Islander who was extremely knowledgeable about the history and about what we should see and do. Included was a memorable lunch in the home of a local couple with home prepared food that is typical of Faroe Islands. This was a unique experience that most tourists are not able to experience and made this particular tour very special. The Lang’s – California, USA

John was an excellent tour guide. He was very informative, full of stories about Faroese history and culture. He also had a wonderful singing voice. The lunch with a local couple, Budwar and Helga, was fantastic. They were very hospitable and typical of the friendliness of the Faroese people. I highly recommend this tour.

Yeah, the lunch was spectacular. I’m glad that I didn’t have to book a separate tour for that. The tour guide sent me pictures afterwards.

It is a very interesting tour, visiting ancient and traditional parts of the island. The lunch in the house of the Faroese family, with home made products adds intimacy and authenticity to the trip. Elsa Maria was a wonderful guide, energetic, very professional, well informed, kind, generous. Her presence and personality mixed with the richness of the tour, covering landscapes, unique places, tradition, history, makes this day tour outstanding. I certainly recommend it to be taken and on a personal level, I hope to come back and enjoy it with my daughter.

I could look around at all the sites without having to watch the road if I was self-driving. The running commentary from a true local completed the tour for me – if I did the sights myself with a self-driving tour, I would have missed out on so much valuable information to do with history, traditions and cultural aspects of the sites and villages.

Elsa and her brother are very personable tour guides without becoming overwhelming in delivering a lot of facts and stories. A good guide really makes the tour special, and I have come away with lasting good memories of Faroe.

If you want to experience the southern island i highly reccomend this tour. Elsa Maria made it warm, engaging and took really good care of us. She was chasing good views so we made some really good photos!

We made the tour with Jens-Petur and it was absolutely outstanding. He’s an incredibly friendly and knowledgeable guide. Throughout the whole trip, he answered all our questions and shared fascinating stories about the magical places we visited. One of the highlights was stopping at a restaurant with a delicious fish soup. Jens-Petur also recommended a beer made with barley from Múlafossur — it was excellent! We had a truly wonderful time. Don’t hesitate to book this tour — you’ll discover so many amazing places.

A well-organised tour which really does cover a lot of ground. Jens Peturs was a great guide who shared his love of the islands along with lots of interesting history and information about life in the Faroes. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this trip to any visitor to the islands. (Elsa Marie was also very responsive to my questions when booking the trip.)

Together with my wife and daughter, I took a day-long minibus tour of three of the Faroe Islands led by Elsa Maria Bærentsen and her brother Jens Petur.
We had high expectations, but nothing prepared us for the stunning landscapes, villages and sea vistas that we saw during the trip. They are truly awe-inspiring and breathtaking. The fish lunch in an unpretentious cafe was delicious too.
What made it perhaps the best tour of its kind that we have ever experienced were the historical and cultural insights that Elsa Maria and Petur introduced us to in such an entertaining and sometimes humorous way as the day unfolded. Both have an intimate knowledge and understanding of their country – for the Faroe Islands are a country and not a far western outpost of Denmark – and of its traditions that have somehow been retained even while the prosperity of the islanders has grown.
The Faroe Islands remain pristine and unspoilt – unlike so many other places that in a globalised world have lost their charm. Going on a tour with Elsa Maria and Petur adds greatly to the enjoyment of a visit. I can’t recommend doing so highly enough.

This tour is the perfect introduction to the Faroe Islands. It should be done at the beginning of your stay so that you can see everything and decide where you’d like to go back to (although this remains a very difficult question, as all the places we visited were magnificent and worthy of a second visit!) Elsa guided the group efficiently and sympathetically, showing us lots of places that we wouldn’t have seen without her knowledge and giving us a wealth of information and anecdotes about the islands. And bonus, a few days later she sent us a souvenir film of the magnificent photos taken during our day. Many thanks for a wonderful day.

If you are considering a guided tour, this is the one for you.

I am very picky when it comes to guided tours and will rather not join one, except if it is local and small or private.
Els Maria is just that. She is a local and an excellent tour guide. Not only will she tell you where you are and what you are seeing, she will also share her stories with her guests, making the experience come alive.

You can clearly see her passion for her birthplace and rightfully so. Also, very protective of the islands, which is a good lesson for all of us.

She is an excellent hostess, obviously loving what she does ( one cannot fake genuine passion) and also takes an interest in her guests. She is curious. It is a small group making it feel more intimate, like you are on a trip with friends.

All in all, a very pleasurable experience. Learned a lot.

A great day out even though the weather wasn’t always on our side! A good, quick intro to some absolutely stunning places on the Faroe Islands, a lot covered in a day. Elsa Maria is a passionate guide who cares about her country a lot, she gave us loads of great information and stories. We ate at a lovely restaurant for lunch as well, delicious food! I also left my hat on the bus and Elsa Maria kindly delivered it to me in Torshavn – very grateful!

An AMAZING day out! This is an absolute must for first timers to the Faroes. Elsa Maria was SUPERB! She was knowledgeable, funny and caring. The scenery was stunning and itinerary was expertly planned. We saw everything we wanted and more with ample time at each place. Being a small group and van made it even more enjoyable with a great choice for lunch. Elsa also helped take photos and this is invaluable if you are travelling by yourself. It was so nice to be cared for by a local and also being shown her personal family history. This left me really connected with the Islands, its history and people

We had only a few days in the Faroes so this tour was ideal. It hit all the famous sites in the two main islands, but it was the guides’ knowledge and enthusiasm for their home which was the real highlight. And we really appreciated the little snacks/samples and the coffee, plus the excellent, unique restaurant chosen for lunch. Great experience

We joined the See It All Faroe Islands Tour with Peter and his sister, and it was absolutely incredible. They took us right around the island, showing us stunning scenery and hidden spots we never would have found on our own. Their knowledge, stories, and warm personalities made the whole day feel special.

A real highlight was getting to taste local meat — something unique to the Faroes — and later enjoying lunch at a charming café, which was the perfect break before continuing the journey.

The pace of the tour was just right, with plenty of time to take in the views while still covering so much in one day. Peter and his sister went above and beyond to make sure we experienced the best of the islands, and we came away with memories we’ll never forget.

If you want a tour that really captures the heart of the Faroe Islands, this is the one to take. Highly recommended!

Elsa Maria was a fantastic guide. Very friendly, very knowledgeable and not afraid to share lots of interesting color. It’s a quirky presentation that looking back made a long day with A LOT of stops really memorable. She was great about being flexible and changing things up on the fly when the clouds / fog made certain sites unviewable and coming back to them out of order. Really allowed us to catch everything. She tag teamed with her brother which added another great dimension to the tour and prepared special treats for everyone. This was a phenomenal way to get to see the heart of the Faroes. Thank you!

This tour gives an excellent overview of the islands, people and culture. Definitely worth every penny, was a wonderful day, and rare to have such a passionate guide with a raw humor like Elsa Maria. Can’t thank enough, was the highlight of my trip!

What a wonderful excursion this was to get an overall of the scenic Faroe Islands! We traveled in a group of 2 comfortable vans (8 travelers plus the driver), driven by a sister and brother from the islands. Our journey took us along many scenic roads, past rushing waterfalls, sheep and cattle grazing on the hillsides, through quaint villages, and views of great coastal scenery. We did quite a few stops at various overlooks and in villages to see interesting sights and landmarks. Our driver narrated throughout the trip, sharing the history, culture, foods, jobs, folk tales, etc. about the islands plus being very open to answering any questions we may have had.
At our stops, our guides did a great job of giving us ample time to enjoy the sights but also trying to keep us on time so we wouldn’t miss our ships’ departure time; not easy to tear us away from the sights! They also provided us with special treats at some stops such as coffee/tea, a taste of local meat chased by a strong drink shot, and a candy bar at the end of the tour. We also stopped for lunch in the town of Sandavajur to eat in a lovely cafe located in a building that had previously been used for processing fish. The food was excellent; the fish soup is sooo good! We got to experience the many types of weather in the Faroes too, from rainy to foggy to sunny so best to come prepared for all of it. This was just a fantastic outing and it will always be a cherished memory for us.

I’ve booked a lot of tours around the world, and this was honestly one of my favourites. Our guide, Elsa, was incredible! When we booked, the café was closed, but she actually phoned them to squeeze us in—that was such a thoughtful touch. She also made the whole experience super fun by creating an atmosphere where everyone got to know each other, with plenty of engaging activities along the way. And it was incredible to explore the Faroe Islands with a local and have all the traditions explained – we really appreciated that. Thank you so much, Elsa! This was a phenomenal tour that I highly advise everyone take. Jens Petur was so knowledgeable about everywhere we went & always had a story or two about the area. Every bit of the tour’s scenery was absolutely breathtaking. Our stop for lunch at Fiskastykkid was such a highlight. My husband and I had a wonderfully informative and comprehensive tour with Jens! We really appreciated his vast local knowledge (and skilful driving), showing us the history, culture and absolutely beautiful landscapes of the Faroe Islands.

“Outstanding” accurately describes it! It was a phenomenal day. Our guides, Jens Petur and Elsa, were absolutely fabulous. I rode with Jens Petur, who was incredibly warm and engaging. There were no questions on the Faroes that he could not answer — history, politics, economy, business, topography, culture, society, cuisine — all with tremendous knowledge, passion and pride, with lots of stories woven in to support the narrative and add a personal touch.

Logistically it was impeccable. A full day, with a meticulously planned, comprehensive route. The two groups were small enough to integrate and coordinate every step along the way, and allowed a nice camaraderie to develop. Also very much appreciated the snacks that Elsa shared with us. The restaurant that we stopped at for lunch was amazing. And the scenery spoke for itself. Breathtaking.

I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. Especially for a brief visit to the Faroe Islands, you will find no better way to see as much of the country as possible in a single day, without ever feeling rushed, overwhelmed, short-changed, or unsafe. And you couldn’t ask for two better hosts than Jens Peter and Elsa. Overall, an unforgettable experience!

Outstanding tour and definitely one of the best, if not the best guided tour I have taken over the years in a multitude of countries around the globe.

Rode with Elsa Maria and her dialog was interesting and thorough. Elsa was excellent at keeping the group on schedule so that all scheduled stops could be included. Questions asked were answered, if not immediately when asked then at an upcoming stop when the information was most useful.

The addition of light snacks, chocolate biscuits and sweets with coffee and tea were a nice surprise. The restaurant we stopped at for lunch had a somewhat limited menu but the items we chose were freshly prepared and delicious.

I am enjoying all the pictures we took during the tour. We were granted a day with mostly clear bright and sunny skies but be prepared for overcast and showers too. As Elsa Maria said, weather in the Faroes is unpredictable … “the land of maybe”.

In early September 2025, I visited the Faroe Islands for the first time, joining a group of six people guided by Elsa Maria. Elsa is a professional local tour guide and a skilled driver. She took us on a tour of some of the Faroe Islands’ most significant and scenic spots. With her excellent service, we thoroughly enjoyed the panoramic views while learning about the local customs, culture, and delicious local cuisine. Elsa Marie’s tour is the best money we spent in the Faroe Islands. We decided to not rent a car and we took her tour, along with her brother’s tour ( Jens Peter) on the north end of the island, both were fantastic.

Elsa was just a delight to spend the day with. She is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about her love of her homeland. She has done hundreds of these tours as a guide, but she gives it her all for the entire day. We had a great group of folks in her van and all of us enjoyed the day immensely.

We had no idea which tour to take, as we just read reviews on different ones. Thankfully I chose wisely. Elsa’s tour was better than the reviews.

If you have time, take Jens Petur’s tour too. It’s to the north end, and is equally as impressive. He too shows great knowledge and excitement for the love of his country.

All other reviewers are correct – this is a great tour, highly recommended! We went with Jens Petir, and along the road he told us many stories about the area, its history, legends, his own history… His commitment, caring and friendliness made this tour a fantastic way to see the islands.

Perfect tour

Jens Petur was absolutely amazing. He was accommodating, efficient, and knowledgable. And, as for someone that was without a car, this was a great way to see the Islands in a day.

My husband and I booked this tour and it was so great. Our guide Jens was kind and above all, so knowledgeable about the Faroe Islands. The landscape of the islands itself is amazing enough, but his stories and commentary on the islands, people, nature was exceptional. The place we were taken for lunch was also delicious.

Elsa is excellent tour guide & driver, very knowledgeable. Told us things about Faroe Island. Fun & Interesting. Highly recommend 😄

Very good alternative if you have limited time or don’t have a car. You will make many stops with outstanding landscape in a comfortable mini van (I am quite tall so I always appreciate space for legs). We were a nice small group, the guide was very knowledgeable and will never stop talking about the Faroe in general and spots on the way in particular so you will learn a lot. Food was not included but the restaurant was very good and reasonable price in comparison to Torshavn.

My husband and I enjoyed the outstanding tour with Elsa Marie on the first day of our visit to the Faroes. The See It All tour took us to several top sites, and drove us over several islands and through several tunnels. It was an easy way to really see the beautiful geography of the islands. And I can’t say enough good things about Elsa Marie. She was informative and taught us a lot about the history and culture of the Faroes, peppered with some personal insights from growing up and seeing the islands change. She was attentive, put is at ease, and has a gentle and witty sense of humor. Lunch was wonderful.

I was in the islands for work with one day of tourist time, so I was recommended to take this tour. Did not regret it!

I took the tour in October with Elsa. She drove me around herself and she shared the rich history of the islands, as well as personal stories. Local history, everyday life, changes happening in the villages, she had her own perspective on all of it. Great insights and a relaxed day. Would recommend!

Majestic 7 Hour Tour to the Northern Islands

Outstanding tour! Our tour guide, Elsa Maria, provided a unique experience of 3 of the Northern most Islands: Kunoy,
Bordoy and Vidoy.
We were picked up and dropped off at our hotel which was nice, since we didn’t rent a car. The car we rode in was comfortable. Coffee, water and various snacks were provided throughout the trip. We stopped for lunch at a nice cafe in Klaksvík. Elsa Maria also took photos along the way to document the trip and sent a link with the photos after the tour. We never felt rushed and saw a variety of sites. Elsa Maria we very knowledgeable and provided a local’s insight on the different areas and on the Faroe Islands. We highly recommend this tour.

The tour guide Jens is such a nice guy and knows everything about the islands. He is so knowledgeable and able to answer all the questions we raised about the Faroe Islands. Though the weather was so terrible, he tried his best to let us enjoy the tour and explore more. Thanks Jens!

Pudimos recorrer las islas que están más al norte, bonitas vistas de acantilados y el océano atlántico, pese a que nos tocó un día con mucha lluvia, viento y neblina, pudimos ver muchos lugares. Nuestra guía, Elsa Maria, es excelente, muy buena conductora, simpática y graciosa, nos mantuvo entretenidos durante las 7 horas. El tour igual incluye almuerzo.

A must tour when in Faroe either on short or long visit! Plenty of stops (coffee and sweets offered as well as some tasteful surprises plus time to enjoy a meal), lots of places to see and admire (either well known and some only local known), different kinds of weather en route but that’s the spice of it along with the excellent story narratives! Sometimes can last a little bit more than 7 hours, but it is worthwhile!

Weather was not on our side but nothing was too difficult for Elsa. She is quick, dynamic and energetic. She adjusts quickly, keeps everybody in the loop and makes the best of time. Elsa takes care and looks out for everyone. We had a 90 yr old gentleman from Utah, US and a 88 yr old lady from Norway. Nothing fazed her. Very charming and loving, stopping by to find out more about a sick horse by the road, letting me see the daily community tourists seldom witness. Very knowledgeable and she has the skills of a race car driver – fast, sharp, safe!

A great day with Jens as our guide – he told us so many personal stories about the places we visited, and his love for the Faroe Islands really shone through. The north – wow – We were greeted with spectacular views and so much history. Thoroughly recommend the tour! Despite a gloomy start in Torshavn, we were lucky with some sunny weather when we got to the northern islands, although I know Jens would have made the trip special even in the rain.

This is by far one of the best tours I’ve done. I went with Elsa. She’s just incredible. She’s very knowledgeable about the islands. She explains things very clearly. She has the best positive energy and she will take immaculate photos for you. She picked me up on time and made sure to drop me off at the hotel as well. Wow, what a wonderful day with our delightful guide, Jens Petur. We were very lucky with the weather – the early morning rain – that looked as though it might continue all day – cleared, offering spectacular views all the way. Low cloud that sometimes blanketed the mountain tops created a wonderful effect that actually enhanced the views. And the heavy rain overnight meant we saw many spectacular waterfalls. This tour is well-planned, with timely stops for coffee, snacks, and lunch. Jens Petur went out of his way to make sure we all (small group of four) had a fabulous time.
