Hvítanes Travel Guide

By Verified Expert

Hvítanes is a small settlement in the nature-filled Faroe Islands. Located on Streymoy Island in the outskirts of the capital Tórshavn, this place sits next to the entrance to the Eysturoyartunnilin underwater tunnel.

The Faroe Islands are known for its many tunnels. These tunnels make it easy and convenient to go island hopping and explore the most remote parts of this serene destination.

From Hvítanes to Underwater Roundabout

Eysturoyartunnilin is the most impressive sub-sea tunnel network in the island group. Featuring the world’s first underwater roundabout, you will find the tunnel’s mouth to this attraction next to Hvítanes.

What makes this piece of infrastructure special is the illuminated artwork around the traffic circle. Designed by local artist Tróndur Patursson, driving under the North Atlantic ocean to this work of art is an experience in its own right.

When entering the tunnel from the hill above Hvítanes, a 7.5 km (4.7 mi) drive awaits you. You will then reach the roundabout located 187 m (614 ft) under the ocean’s surface. From the roundabout, you can continue either to the village Strendur or Runavík. This roundabout under the Skálafjørður fjord enables you to get to both sides of the fjord through the underwater tunnel.

Hvítanes translates to the white headland. You will understand the name of the settlement on a stormy day when white surf covers the entire seaside. It is an impressive sight. Walking on the quiet road in the settlement itself will give you peace of mind and solitude.

The settlement itself is very quiet thanks to all inter-island traffic taking place above Hvítanes itself. You will not even hear the traffic from the Eysturoyartunnilin tunnel when walking between the houses in the settlement or taking the walk on the unpaved path from the quiet road in the hamlet and to the seaside.
