Village Hov

Hov Travel Guide

By Verified Expert

Hov is one of the smallest settlements on Suðuroy Island in the far-flung Faroe Islands. You will find the settlement in the very first written documents about the Faroe Islands. This makes Hov one of the oldest cultural locations in the archipelago.

As with so many places in the island group, a mountain tunnel links Hov to the main village on Suðuroy Island, Tvøroyri. The 2435 metres (1.5 miles) two-lane tunnel makes for an easy ride to the cluster of houses found along the shoteline.

You will reach Hov above the settlement itself. Once you get out of the tunnel, you are in the valley with houses on your left hand side. The tunnel Hovstunnilin connects the northern part of Suðuroy Island to the southern part of the island.

Suðuroy Island is home to a dramatic and spectacular coastal scenery. When in Hov, you will have views over the North Atlantic ocean when looking in an eastern direction.

Hov is perched midway on the island. You will get to the place when heading south on the quality road network on the island. Due to its modest size, the villagers go shopping in nearby places. With around 12 km (7.5 miles) to the villages Vágur and Tvøroyri, this is where they go.

Stop in the small settlement for coastal views. The only place with marked parking spaces is outside Suðuroy Island Collage located in the settlement. You can also park the car at the small harbour although there are not marked parking lots here.

Most travellers visiting this most southerly isle in the archipalago want to experience its most southernly point, Akraberg. You will find one of the most epic lighthouses in the Faroe Islands on the southernmost tip of the island group. Other popular attractions nearby are the settlement Sumba and the coastal views seen from Eggjarnar view point.
