Leynar Travel Guide

By Verified Expert

Leynar is a picturesque settlement on Streymoy Island in the far-flung Faroe Islands. On the (few) warm sunny summer days locals will flock to the beach in Leynar to sunbathe.

Lake Leynavatn is located next to the settlement. The lake is ideal for a walk as part of any Leynar experience. Water from the lake flows in a lovely stream between the mountains and ends in the North Atlantic ocean just where this seaside settlement is located.

Leynar beach in the Faroe Islands
There are many sand beaches in the island group. These are exposed to the cold North Atlantic ocean all year round. One of the most popular beaches to enjoy one of the occasionally sunny days is Leynasandur located in the settlement Leynar on Streymoy Island.

You will pass this settlement when heading to Vestmanna and the popular sea cliffs there. The sandy Leynasandur Beach is located on your left hand side as you head to Vestmanna.

Known for its many tunnels, Leynar also has a tunnel named after the name of the settlement. Leynatunnilin is one of many mountain tunnels in the Faroe Islands. The double tracked tunnel makes for a safe passage through a mountain known for smaller landslides and more often rolling stones. There is a road around the mountain now closed as the tunnel is now there.

Leynar is located less than a minutes drive from the underwater tunnel Vágatunnilin. So once you leave the airport island Vágar after entering the the underwater tunnel linking Vágar Island to Streymoy Island, you will find yourself right next to Leynar.

Due to its small size, there are no shops in the settlement. The locals and travellers head to Vestmanna to purchase food. There is a gas station only minutes away from the houses in Leynar where you will also find some basic essentials.
