Múlafossur Waterfall Travel Guide

Múlafossur Waterfall is easily the most famous attraction in the Faroe Islands. The picture-perfect Múlafossur is hidden far away from the crowds in the secluded settlement Gásadalur on Vagar Island some 11 km (7 miles) from Vagar Airport.

A nice walk from the few houses in the Gásadalur settlement, you will find this famous waterfall. This plummeting waterfall is known for its taking-your-breath-away experience. Just before getting to the waterfall, you will drive through the Gásadalstunnilin tunnel. This is one of many mountain tunnels in the Faroe Islands connecting the local community together.

There is a parking lot near the waterfall. From this parking lot, you will walk for 2 minutes in order to reach the breathtakingly beautiful waterfall that drops into the ocean. The cascade drops more than 30 meters (100 feet). You will stand safe near the edge of the cliff watching the constant flow of water with mountains and a cluster of houses as a backdrop.

During windy days, you are likely to see the water rising up into the air. This is a common sight all around the Faroe Islands.

Experiencing Múlafossur Waterfall

Múlafossur translates directly to the Promontory waterfall. The village sits high and with a sheer drop where the waterfall plunges into the ocean. There are only 25 houses in the village Gásadalur located just behind Múlafossur waterfall. Even fewer people call this remote settlement their home.

Those looking for something extra can stay in the settlement overnight. The best accommodation option in Gásadalur is the Múlafossur Cottages.

These cottages are located next to the stream that turns into Múlafossur Waterfall further down the valley. A good option for those who want to experience this attraction is to join a waterfall tour such as the fully guided See it All Faroe Islands Tour. All tours come with a local tour guide.
