Mykineshólmur Islet is the most westerly piece of land in the wild Faroe Islands. The islet is home to a lighthouse overlooking the North Atlantic Ocean. A bridge connects the islet Mykineshólmur with the the bigger Mykines Island.
A canyon, named Hólmagjógv, separates the islet from Mykines Island. A bridge links the islet to the island.
Mykineshólmur is the westernmost part of the Faroe Islands. The islet rises 133 metres (436 feet) from the sea.
You will get extraordinary views of the islet from the northern part of Mykines Island. Join a guided Mykines Tour and you might end up getting majestic views towards the lighthouse outpost in the Faroe Islands.
Puffins on Mykineshólmur Islet
The islet is uninhabited. Nevertheless, the place brims with life. Birds find their way to this outpost especially during the summer months from May throughout August.
Puffins are a real treat for travellers visiting during the bright summer months. These charming seabirds, with their colourful beaks and playful behaviour, nest on the islet’s grassy cliffs.
During this time, puffins can be seen flying to and from the sea, bringing small fish to their burrow nests hidden in the green hillsides. The Faroe Islands in summer provides ideal conditions for feeding, as the surrounding North Atlantic waters are rich with seafood. Jákup Sverri is the maritime research vessel in the Faroe Islands examining the waters around the archipelago all year round.
The main Mykines Island is renowned as a prime puffin-watching spot. Same goes for Mykineshólmur Islet. These places are a puffin haven securing visitors thousands of birds in their natural habitat amidst the serene surroundings.
