Søldarfjørður Travel Guide

By Verified Expert

Søldarfjørður lies on Eysturoy Island in the far-flung Faroe Islands. The houses sits in the heart of the peaceful Skálafjørður Fjord. This settlement is part of a chain of villages stretching along the east side of the Skálafjørður Fjord, the longest of its kind in the archipelago.

One of the main attractions here is the atmospheric house Garðahúsið. This idyllic country home serves hot drinks and pastries to travellers as they are invited inside this private home. All this makes a visit to the village more personal and memorable. It adds something extra to any visit.

With its colourful houses dotting the hillside and tranquil views of the Skálafjørður Fjord, this is a place to refresh your mind. There are mountain views to soak in and the water right in front of you.

Getting from Tórshavn to Søldarfjørður

Getting from the capital Tórshavn to Søldarfjørður is convenient and easy thanks to the Eysturoyartunnilin Tunnel. The Faroe Islands are home to a lot of tunnels. Four of the tunnels will tale you under the seabed from one island to another. All other tunnels go through mountains.

While there are many tunnels in the Faroe Islands, there is only one featuring an undersea roundabout. This is the world’s first underwater traffic circle and it connects the capital Tórshavn to Eysturoy Island. With this roundabout tunnel, Søldarfjørður is only a short ride away from Tórshavn.

It takes around 20 minutes driving from Tórshavn to Søldarfjørður when taking the Eysturoyartunnilin Tunnel shortcut. The tunnel plunges 187 meters (614 feet) below sea level. The tunnel is illuminated by local artist Tróndur Patursson making the drive itself an experience in its own rigth. Once you emerge through the Runavík tunnel portal, follow the road along the eastern coast of Eysturoy Island until you reach Søldarfjørður.
