Trøllkonufingur is a towering rock formation on Vágar Island in the achingly beautiful Faroe Islands. The outlook post from where you see the attraction is easy to reach.

Located outside of the village Sandavágur, you will experience the monolith after walking on an unpaved road for 20 minutes or so. A good spot to start your walk to Trøllkonufingur is from the café Fiskastykkið.

You can also drive towards the basalt formation. This will shorten the walk to just a couple of minutes before you get a good view of this much-photographed icon.

Trøllkonufingur translates to the Troll Woman’s Finger. The spiky rock rises soaring 313 meters (1027 feet) out of the sea.

This attraction is also visible from the nearby village Miðvágur. In that case, you will have the cliffs on Streymoy Island in the background.

Those wanting to get a view of the sky-high basalt column from Miðvágur will head to the village’s west side. Once you get to the end of the road with the Miðvágur bay on your lefthand side, the views of Trøllkonufingur are great.

Whether you enjoy the views of Trøllkonufingur from Sandavágur or Miðvágur, you will do so in tranquil surroundings. Both places come with no traffic and you are likely to be one of only few travellers around.
