The Eysturoy Tunnel known locally as the Eysturoyartunnilin is an impressive underwater tunnel network in the picturesque Faroe Islands. It stands our as the longest sub-sea tunnel in the island group and includes the world’s first underwater roundabout.

This remarkable tunnel is a bucket list experience in the Faroe Islands. Eysturoyartunnilin links Streymoy Island to its neighbour Eysturoy Island. With their rugged landscapes, sheer hills, and dramatic coastlines, the 18 Faroe Islands have historically been separated from each other. Now, with a wide selection of mountain tunnels and underwater alike, the archipelago is easy to explore.

The mountainous terrain and all the peaceful fjords are still there. Nevertheless, with more than 20 tunnels, getting from one part of the island group to another has never been easier. All the tunnels make travels safe all year round between the islands and various settlements.

Eysturoyartunnilin is no exception and significantly reduces travel time and comfort from the capital Tórshavn to both Eysturoy Island and the islands found further north. Passing the underwater tunnel comes with a tunnel toll fee. The tunnel is open day and night.

The Eysturoy Tunnel Underwater Roundabout

The Eysturoy Tunnel roundabout is located under the seabed.

The most remarkable feature of this tunnel network is roundabout found under the seabed. This is the world’s first under-sea roundabout. It makes driving through the tunnel an experience in its own right.

Situated within the tunnel, this roundabout links the villages found on both sides of the Skálafjørður fjord. By allowing vehicles to smoothly transition from the main village Strendur on the west side of the inlet and Runavík on the east side of the fjord, the entire area is easy to reach with travel time reduced significantly.

The Eysturoyartunnilin has more than any other tunnel in the Faroe Islands reshaped the landscape of travel in the Faroe Islands. Make sure to include passing the Eysturoy Tunnel when driving in the Faroe Islands.
