Hvannasund is a settlement in the Faroe Islands known for its beautiful church nestled along the seaside. The settlement is located on the western side of Viðoy Island in the northern part of the island group.

This place is home to a traditional fishing community. From Hvannasund you can head further north to the most northerly village in the Faroe Islands, Viðareiði.

Church and steep mountains
The church sits next to the ocean. Steep mountains surround this place.

The public ferry to the two smallest islands in the northern part of the Faroe Islands departs from Hvannasund. Sail from Hvannasund to both Svínoy Island and Fugloy Island. There are some daily departures throughout the year.

A causeway connects Hvannasund to nearby Norðdepil. Neighbouring Norðdepil has one of very few traffic lights in the Faroe Islands.

What makes this place special are the incredible steep mountains surrounding the cluster of houses along the coastline. With its towering heights, the mountains found here are some of the steepest in the archipelago.

During the winter months from November to March, this place gets extremely dark. Catching the nightscape here during winter is something else. It is unlike anything you have seen before. The steep mountains make everything eveen more dark than it would otherwise be in places such as the capital, Tórshavn.
