Leynasandur Beach

Leynasandur is a sandy beach in the remote Fare Islands. Located on Streymoy Island, this is the most popular beach among the locals when the sun warms the islands.
This beach is located in an inlet where the small settlement Leynar is situated. You will find some charming old grass-roofed houses just beside the sandy beach Leynasandur.
A stream runs through the area and into the North Atlantic ocean. The water comes from Lake Leynavatn located nearby. Here, the water gathers from several waterfalls that find their way down the mountain sides from surrounding grassy mountains.
Faroe Islands salmon is a big thing. While all exported salmon from the island group is farmed, the water that flows between the mountains and through the sandy beach is home to wild salmon. This makes Lake Leynavatn one of the best spots in the archipelago for sports fishing. The locals have build ladders in the stream to help the wild salmon reach the spawning grounds further in Lake Leitisvatn and beyond. You will see these gently constructed stairs when on the beach.
When to Visit Leynasandur
While the beach is open to the public all year round, the sand only occasionally gets more than a handful of visitors at the same time. Whether you visit in the off-season from October to April or during the summer months form May to September, you will most likely have the entire beach all for yourself.
You can either park your car just when entering the settlement Leynar or you can drive further into the place and park between the houses. There is a parking lot here. Walk down a concrete platform descending to ocean level and you will step right on the sandy beach.
There are also busses to Leynar. Take a look at the bus route 100 from the capital Tórshavn to Vestmanna. The bus driver will stop next to the main road leading into Leynar. From here you will walk for only minutes before setting your foot on Leynasandur. Enjoy the view from the beach towards Vágar Island and further out in the horizon the uninhabited Koltur Island.
