Sandur is the main and most important historical settlement on Sandoy Island. With several lakes and flat grass fields, Sandur is an oasis for Faroe Islanders when enjoying the holiday season.
From Sandur, you have a nice view of the three small islands Skúvoy, Stóra Dímun and Lítla Dímun. There is a grocery store in the village and you can always grab a coffee at the small local shop.
An unpaved road leads from the cluster of houses in the village to the nature area Søltuvík. You can get there by car from Sandur and enjoy the secluded surroundings.
With an underwater tunnel connecting Sandoy Island to the main Streymoy Island, getting to the village Sandur is easy. It takes only 25 minutes to get from Tórshavn to Sandur with the speed limit being 80 kph / 50 mph all the way.
Accommodation
Those who look for an accommodation option in the village should go for Bænadiktstova. Look no further as this luxury cottage lies in the most peaceful and lovely surroundings. Imagine a tranquil lake, mellow mountains and a wild coastline. You get all of this and more when staying at this Nordic cottage with all facilities needed for the perfect stay.
When in Sandur, make sure to go for a walk along the sandy beach in the village. Moreover, a walk along Lake Sandsvatn is always rewarding. This is unquestionable one of the most lovely lakes in the Faroe Islands. The sandy dunes found between the beach and the lake behind it is one of the draws that lure visitors to Sandoy Island.
