Søltuvík

Søltuvík is a nature area on Sandoy Island in the wild Faroe Islands. The place is unpopulated and filled with peace and undisturbed tranquillity. Only few travellers find their way to this secluded place far away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The attraction lies a 5 km (3 miles) drive from the nearest village, Sandur. There is an unpaved road all the way from Sandur to Søltuvík.

When in Søltuvík, take your time to enjoy the endless ocean views. Waves from the wast North Atlantic Ocean collapse agains the stony beach along the shoreline.

The entire places is covered with the iconic grassy surface of the Faroe Islands. Sheep roam freely and the birdlife is rich here. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot a seal or two!

From Tórshavn to Søltuvík

Getting to Sandoy Island from Streymoy Island is easy thanks to the Sandoyartunnilin underwater tunnel linking the islands together. The 10.8 km (6.7 mi) sub-sea tunnel connecting Streymoy Island to Sandoy Island will get you from the capital to Søltuvík within around 30 minutes.

With the underwater tunnel’s portal located halfway between the settlements Skopun and Sandur, once on Sandoy Island, it takes only 10 minutes to drive to Søltuvík. Follow the well-maintained main road south toward Sandur and once passing through the houses in the settlement itself, take the first right onto Undir Reynum, a roughly paved road that eventually becomes unpaved. The attraction lies at the end of this road.

The Principia Monument

A monument stands at this attraction erected in 2010 in memory of the ship Principia, which got shipwrecked in 1895 after getting caught in a storm. The ship left from Dundee in Scotland and was on its way to the United States when it struck a rock off the coast of Søltuvík. Of the 28 men on board, only one survived after drifting for 14 hours on a cargo hatch. People in Kirkjubøur on Streymoy Island saved the survivor.

Two anchors recovered from a dive to the wreckage in 2001 are now part of the monument that stands in the area.

Søltuvík Lookout Hike

Embark on a short yet stunning hike to the cliffs south of Søltuvík for breathtaking coastal views. The scenic loop starts and ends in Søltuvík.

Follow the red painted wooden poles up the hill south of the attraction to a lookout point above the bay. From here, continue along the coastal trail, enjoying wide views of Sandoy Island’s rugged western cliffs and the 182 metre-high (597 ft) sea stack Oknadalsdrangur.

Follow the trail along the cliff edge and gradually make your way back toward Søltuvík, following the red poles. The route is mostly off-road with uneven and sometimes steep terrain, so take care in windy or foggy conditions.

The loop trail is approximately 4.5 km (2.8 miles) and takes around 1-2 hours to complete.
