Lake Sandsvatn

Sandsvatn is a peaceful lake on Sandoy Island in the nature-filled Faroe Islands. The lake is located in serene surroundings and is popular among kayakers.

Lake Sandsvatn is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Faroe Islands. It is around 2 km (1.3 mi) from one end to the other. The lake is nestled close to the lovely black sand beach of Sandur which also gives the lake its name. The name of the lake translates to “The Lake of Sand”. A river flows from the lake and into the North Atlantic ocean via the beach.

A protected area sits between the lake and the beach. Here, you will find the sand dunes of Mølheyggjar.

The lake itself is one of the best spots for birdwatchers in the Faroe Islands. Rare species thrive here and some of them are mostly seen here. Getting to Lake Sandsvatn

Lake Sandsvatn will be among the first places you’ll see when arriving on Sandoy Island. The sub-sea tunnel Sandoyartunnilin links the island to the main isle, Streymoy Island. You will drive along the lake before getting to the main settlement on the island, Sandur.

There are public busses from Tórshavn to Sandoy Island. Take a look at bus route 650 for a direct connection from the capital to the village of Sandur. The village is located in a fairly flat area and next to it sits the peaceful lake.
