Húsar is a small settlement on Kalsoy Island in the remote Faroe Islands. The hamlet lies in the northern part of the archipelago. Known for its mountainous settings, this place comes with gorgeous seaside views.

This settlement is nestled along the coastline found the the islands eastern coast. The island comes with a long and narrow shape. Most of the island’s west coast is rugged and merely sheer cliffs. The east coast is more gentle and this is where Húsar an the three other hamlets on the island are located.

Húsar is the largest of the four settlements on Kalsoy Island. Large is a relative word with only around 40 inhabitants in the coastal settlement.

Getting to Húsar

You will take a ferry to Kalsoy Island from nearby Borðoy Island in order to reach the long and narrow isle. The ferry to Kalsoy Island leaves from the town Klaksvík. The ferry ride itself takes 20 minutes.

Once on Kalsoy Island you will immediately find yourself next to the settlement Syðradalur. From here it only takes a few minutes drive north and you will reach Húsar. You will drive for 3 km (1.9 mi) from the harbour on Kalsoy Island until you are in Húsar.

There are lots of tunnels in the Faroe Islands. With its steep mountains and many valleys, Kalsoy Island is no exception. In order to get reach the two settlements found further north from Húsar, you will drive through a total of four mountain tunnels. First you will drive through three tunnels to the settlement Mikladalur and then a fourth tunnel to reach the northernmost settlement, Trøllanes.

When in Húsar, you will have great views of the mighty Kunoy Island rising out of the North Atlantic ocean on the other side of the Kalsoyarfjørður fjord. Due to its limited size, there are no real services available in the hamlet.

People on Kalsoy Island head to Klaksvík shopping essentials. There are public toilets in all settlements except Húsar. For parking options in the settlement, the only real option is to drive down to the small harbour where there is a bit of space that will not disturb the local, if very limited traffic.
