There are public busses from Tórshavn to Sandoy Island. Take a look at bus route 650 for a direct connection from the capital in the Faroe Islands to the village Sandur. The village is located in a fairly flat area and next to it sits the peaceful lake.

This lake is nestled close to a lovely sand beach which also gives the lake its name. The name of the lake translates to “The Lake of Sand”. A river flows from the lake and into the North Atlantic ocean along the sandy area.

A conservation protected area sits between the lake and the beach. Here you will find sand dunes named “Mølheyggjar” by the locals.

The lake itself is one of the best spots for birdwatchers in the Faroe Islands. Rare species thrive here and some of them are mostly seen on Sandoy Island in the archipelago. Take a look at Sandoy Island Tours and you might very well get the chance to see the enchanting birdlife on the lake and in its near surroundings.
