Skála

By Verified Expert

Skála is a village on the western shore of the Skálafjørður Fjord on Eysturoy Island. The fjord itself takes its name from the village. Known for its shipyard and maritime vibe, Skála sits at the water’s edge with steep mountains rising behind it.

Skálafjørður Fjord is the longest fjord in the Faroe Islands, and both sides of it are connected to the capital, Tórshavn, through a subsea tunnel with a roundabout. This makes Skála an easy village to add to any road trip itinerary in the Faroe Islands.

The village stretches over quite a long part of the fjord compared to many other settlements in the Faroe Islands. The main reason is the easy access to the fjord which has been of key importance for the islanders throughout the centuries. This was a good spot for fishing, and living right next to the calm fjord made it convenient for getting food easily all year round.

What to see in Skála

The village is a peaceful and scenic place to go for a stroll. And if you’re hungry, you can find a grocery store and a bakery in the village. They are located opposite each other along Skálavegur, the main road in the village.

In 1940, the village got its own church. Before that, the inhabitants of Skála used to go to the neighbouring village of Strendur to attend church on Sundays. The new church is a concrete structure with a red fiber-cement roof.

Skála is worth a visit all year round. The place has a peaceful feel to it and while it is one of the bigger settlements on Eysturoy Island, size is relative with less than 1000 people living in the place.
