Viðoy Island is the most northernly isle in the mountainous Faroe Islands. The island is home to the much-visited village Viðareiði where you will also experience Mount Villingadalsfjall.

Even with steep mountains all around, you will explore the island with ease thanks to mountain tunnels. There are a lot of tunnels in the Faroe Islands making travel the isles fun and convenient. There are two settlements on the island, Hvannasund and Viðareiði. Both places are essential attractions to visit on any road trip in the Faroe Islands. A causeway connect Viðoy Island to its neighbouring Borðoy Island.

Mount Villingardalsfjall is the highest mountain on the island. The mountain peaks at 841 meters (2759 feet) making it among the highest mountains in the archipelago. It requires a great effort to hike up the steep hillside from the village Viðareiði to the Mount Villingadalsfjall summit. Expect to hike for two hours in order to reach the top.

With an ever-changing weather, standing on the top of Mount Villingadalsfjall might see you and the peak covered in clouds. Always check the weather forecast before hiking the mountains in the Faroe Islands. A way more accessible sight and stunning indeed is the church in Viðareiði. There are a handful of churches in the Faroe Islands with outstanding backdrops. This one is much appreciated for its epic location next to the craggy coastline.

Another great attraction on the island is Cape Enniberg. This is a 754 metre (2474 feet) vertical sea cliff which makes it the world’s tallest vertical sea cliff.

The best way to reach Cape Enniberg is to hike all the way up to Mount Villingadalsfjall. From here you can then hike further to the impressive sheer wall.

You can see Viðoy Island on the map of the Faroe Islands located as the most northerly isle in the archipelago. While the mountains are very steep, the village Viðareiði sits in a wide isthmus which give you a wide open space.

Coastal views from especially Viðareiði are stunning. When at the coastline where the church is nestled, take a look at the nearby Borðoy Island and you will see the ghost town Múli at the foot of the sheer mountain behind it.
