Lopra Travel Guide

By Verified Expert

Lopra is a small settlement in the southern part of Suðuroy Island in the breathtakingly beautiful Faroe Island. You will pass the settlement when exploring attractions further south on the island.

As you approach the settlement, you will see the very peak of the Beinisvørð Cliff. On the right hand side of the Beinisvørð cliff, you will see the pyramid-shaped Mount Kirvi. Lopra is known for its great bottle water sold as Kirvi across the Faroe Islands. The water is named after the Mount Kirvi, which peaks at 236 metres (774 feet).

There are only some 35 houses in the settlement. Most of them are clustered one one main road in Lopra. Beside the water distilled in the settlement, there is a small boat marina belonging to the locals.

Most travellers drive by Lopra for spectacular views found on the southernmost tip of the island around Akraberg. This is where you will see white and red painted lighthouse facing the swells of the North Atlantic ocean. Just before getting to the lighthouse, you will find yourself in the settlement Sumba. There is a mountain tunnel next to Lopra that links Sumba to the quality road network on the island.

While tunnels in the Faroe Islands make exploring the islands easy and convenient, there is also a mountain road from Lopra to Sumba. The mountain passage was the only way to get between these two settlements before the tunnel opened.

Nevertheless, the mountain road is still open and is great way to get from Lopra to Sumba as long as there is no snow. There might be snow on the road between November and March. Take the road for the breathtaking views from Beinisvørð.

When in Lopra you will notice circle shaped pens on the fjord. These are salmon pens and the main export in the archipelago.

Salmon from the Faroe Islands is known for its excellent quality. You will understand why the salmon has such a good reputation worldwide when you see the pristine surroundings on Suðuroy Island. What you see surrounding the fjord is merely mountains and the road leading to the settlements Akraberg and Sumba.
