Oyndarfjørður Travel Guide

Oyndarfjørður is a small settlement nestled on the northeastern shore of Eysturoy Island in the far-flung Faroe Islands. The settlement has a beautiful church and a lovely view towards the neighbouring hamlet Hellurnar situated in the same fjord as Oyndarfjørður.

In order to get to this place, you will drive on a paved road between beautiful mountains. A gentle stream runs through the settlement.

This quaint settlement, home to only 80 houses, is renowned for its tranquil fjord. Traditional boat houses are perched along the coastline. Inside most of these boat houses are small fishing boats used occasionally for deep sea fishing.

While the boat houses look good, they might be less used now than in earlier times. On the other hand, boats used for Faroe Island salmon farming sail from Oyndarfjørður on a daily base. These boats are used for the salmon pens which you can see when in the settlement. This live webcam of the road to Oyndarfjørður will let you know the current road conditions.

Hiking Trail with Oyndarfjørður Views

Hiking enthusiasts will find a great trail with panoramic views of the fjord and mountains nearby. Take a look at the best hikes in the Faroe Islands. One of the popular hikes will take you from Fuglafjørður to Hellurnar on the other side of the fjord. This out-and-back hike will take you through mountain scapes found nowhere else.

As you will return the same way as you went out when hiking the trail between Fuglufjørður and Hellurnar, you might just as well start the hike in Hellurnar and then return to the place once you get to Fuglafjørður. Either way, you will get epic views of the mountains above Oyndarfjørður and the settlement itself.

Oyndarfjørður is located fairly near some main attractions on Eysturoy Island. Firstly, a short drive away sits Mount Slættaratindur, the highest peak in the Faroe Islands. Secondly, an easier and much shorter hike, yet still offering breathtaking vistas, is the Hvíthamar Vantage Point. Find these and other nature attractions close to the quiet moments enjoyed in Oyndarfjørður.
