Sørvágsfjørður Fjord Travel Guide

By Verified Expert

Sørvágsfjørður is a fjord on Vágar Island in the far-flung Faroe Islands. The Sørvágsfjørður Fjord is named after the village Sørvágur, which sits at the bottom of the fjord.

Boats to Mykines Island depart from the Sørvágur marina. You will also reach the Drangarnir Sea Arch when sailing along Sørvágsfjørður. The coastline comes with hills on both sides of the meandering fjord. At the end of the fjord lies the impressive islet Tindhólmur opposite to Skarðsáfossur Waterfall.

Flights to the Faroe Islands descend along Sørvágsfjørður as the only airport in the Faroe Islands. Vágar Airport is located next to the fjord. Air traffic to the Faroe Islands also arrives from the opposite side of the runway where Lake Leitisvatn sits.

The lovely settlement of Bøur with its cluster of sod-roofed houses is also located along the fjord. You will reach the settlement when heading towards the village Gásadalur home to the famous Múlafossur Waterfall. As you drive from Sørvágur to Bøur and from Bøur to Gásadalur, you will have Sørvágsfjørður Fjord on your left hand side all the way.

At the very end of the fjord lies Tindhólmur Islet. This spiky place looks like an island but due to no running water, it holds the statues as an islet.

The islet is home to nothing but sheep and birds. Sheep roam freely on the islet all year round. There are a handful of cabins near the islet’s waterfront. These huts are used by the locals mostly before and after herding sheep.
