Streymnes

Streymnes is a settlement on the Streymoy Island in the far-flung Faroe Islands. The settlement lies next to another same-size settlement, Hvalvík.
The modest settlement of Streymnes is together with neighbouring Hvalvík the gate to one of the Faroe Islands’ most visited locations. After an epic drive through a wilderness filled valley from Streymnes and Hvalvík, you get to the magical hamlet of Saksun.
Streymnes sits alongside its sister settlement of Hvalvík. A river separates the two settlements from each other.
Together these settlements form a small community anchored in the traditional village life in the Faroe Islands. Any adventure to Saksun will take you close if not through Streymnes.
From Streymnes to Saksun
The road to Saksun winds through the valleys with mountains on both sides of the road. As you find your way through the valley, you pass countless cascading waterfalls and the raw beauty of the Faroe Islands.
This scenic drive takes just 15 minutes. Travellers visit Saksun for the beauty surrounding it. From the ancient farm Dúvugarðar with its grass-covered houses to the sandy lagoon, Saksun is a true nature gem.
Perhaps surprisingly for such a small settlement, Streymnes boasts a high-quality football pitch that regularly hosts matches in the Faroe Islands’ premier league. The national football team in the Faroe Islands has had a handful of players on the team with a lot of matches played on this outdoor stadium. As most football stadium in the archipelago, this one comes against a backdrop of steep mountains.
There are also other celebrated attractions nearby. From the Fossá Waterfall to the secluded settlement Tjørnuvík. Beside arriving in a rental car, you can also take the public bus to Streymnes. Check the bus route network if planning to arrive by bus.
