Hoyvík is a district in the capital Tórshavn in the far-flung Faroe Islands. Besides many new houses there is also the old Hoyvík settlement by the peninsula. This is a place of peace and solitude with ocean views.
Cultivated land used to separate the district from the capital. Since then, Hoyvík and Tórshavn have grown together.
You will find grocery stores in Hoyvík as well as sports facilities. The church in the district is easy to recognise in the skyline.
Hoyvík is located near the Eysturoyartunnilin tunnel that connects Streymoy Island to Eysturoy Island. The tunnel features the world’s first underwater roundabout. Once you get out of the sub-sea tunnel, you will first see the small seaside settlement Hvítanes and shortly after you will reach houses in Hoyvík.
Ocean Swimming in Hoyvík
If you go to the farm place Hoyvíksgarður, you will get to a small harbour area. This is the preferred place for the locals to swim in the ocean.
Before jumping into the ocean, you should know that the water is 6 degrees Celsius (43 Fahrenheit) both summer and winter. While at the seaside, you might very well see some kayaking taking place as it has become a popular activity in this area.
Check out the ultimate Guide to Tórshavn that also includes more details about this part of the capital. The guide comes with some good advice on how to find a quality lunch, reasonable priced.
Suburb Bus Connections
Those relying on public busses as their means of transportation while in the Faroe Islands are well-off. The blue public busses heading in and out of Tórshavn stop in Hoyvík and the free of charge red city busses in Tórshavn operate all days of the week with several hourly stops in this part of the capital.
Take a look at all activities starting in Hoyvík. Within easy reach form Tórshavn, make sure to join a tour that ticks your travel goals.
