Getting to Tvøroyri is an experience in itself. Named after the merlin falcon, the ferry SMYRIL, connects Suðuroy Island to Tórshavn with daily sailings. The two-hour voyage through the North Atlantic Ocean offers breathtaking views of a handful of islands.

There are a total of 18 islands in the Faroe Islands. Along the route between the capital and the most southerly island, you will pass these isles:

  • Nólsoy Island
  • Sandoy Island
  • Skúvoy Island
  • Stóra Dímun
  • Lítla Dímun

Departing from Tórshavn’s ferry and bus terminal, the ferry ride is always a pleasant one. This comes down to the size of the ferry which ensures a smooth crossing. The ferry is well-equipped with comfortable seating areas and a café serving hot drinks and light meals.

Exploring the Valley Hvannhagi

Hvannhagi is carved by ancient glaciers and sits in a natural amphitheater. In order to get to the place, you will hike from Tvøroyri. The hiking trail begins near the local hospital, clearly marked with orange coloured wooden sticks.

As you ascend, the path reveals increasingly spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. The three-hour round trip takes you through diverse terrain, from gentle slopes covered in mostly grass and some heather to more challenging rocky sections. Getting to Hvannhagi is one of the best hikes in the Faroe Islands.

The hike is rewarding in its own right and it just adds to the experience that you reach out-of-this world viewpoints. Enjoy overlooking the dramatic cliff faces and the picturesque lake. Mountains surround the basin and the place comes with views of the small island Lítla Dímun.
