Sundini strait in winter

Sundini Strait Travel Guide

By Verified Expert

Sundini is the collective name for the villages along the east side of Streymoy Island and the west side of Eysturoy Island in the wild Faroe Islands. This place is also called Sundalagið, which means the strait area and refers to the strait between the two main islands in the Faroe Islands, Streymoy Island and Eysturoy Island.

A bridge links Streymoy Island to its neighbouring Eysturoy Island. This bridge is known by the locals as Brúgvin um Streymin. The region is known for its great photo opportunities from Fossá Waterfall to the remote hamlet Tjørvuvík well hidden between steep mountains. Once you enter Eysturoy Island from Streymoy Island, you find yourself in the settlement Oyrarbakki. This place comes with a couple of grocery stores and a gas station.

Other settlements along the coast are Norðskáli on Eysturoy Island and Streymnes and Haldórsvík both on Streymoy Island. What defines these places are their undisturbed views out to the strait with the steep mountains surrounding the scenery.

Both places come with cluster of houses and good options for stopping. The houses in Haldórsvík are more densely located while Norðskáli is scattered more along the shoreline.

There are roads on both sides of the Sundini Strait. The road on Eysturoy Island is two-lane all the way. On the contrary, some parts of the stretch between the coastal settlement Langasandur and Tjørnuvík are single lane.

All those places where the road is single lane come with lay-bys which usually fit a couple of vehicles. Pull of when you meet ongoing traffic and the lay-by is on your right hand side. For more details on traffic, take a look at this ultimate guide to driving in the Faroe Islands.
