Haraldssund Travel Guide

Haraldssund is one of only two settlements on Kunoy Island in the northern part of the windswept Faroe Islands. A short causeway connects the settlement to nearby Borðoy Island.

The cluster of houses here are surrounded by steep mountains on the east side of the island. You will drive from Haraldssund through a narrow tunnel in order to reach the west side of the island.

Here you will find the other settlement on the island. The small settlement on the island’s westside is named Kunoy after the island itself.

With 340 mountain summits in the Faroe Islands, the island group is mountainous. Kunoy Island is even more so and has the most steep and highest mountains on average on any of the 18 islands that make up the Faroe Islands.

With its small population and proximity to the much more populous city Klaksvík, the services you get in Haraldssund are limited. The locals in the small settlement take the 6 kilometre (3.7 miles) route to Klaksvík when in need of goods and basic services. What the settlement lacks in terms of services, it has in its stunning surroundings.

  • Grocery store: No
  • Café: No
  • Public toilet: No
  • Parking lot: No

Even though there are no marked spaces for parking in the settlement, you are still able to park your car here. Simply pull of the road and park. There is very little traffic between the few houses in Hvannasund so you can park by the road without worrying.

The clean air in Harladssund will reawake your senses. Moreover, with few if any travellers around, this is a great spot to go for a brisk walk and just soak in the quietness of the place. Travellers without a car find their way here by taking the bus from Klakvík to Kunoy. For more flexibility, make sure to drive in the Faroe Islands yourself.
