Sandvík is the northernmost settlement on Suðuroy Island in the wild Faroe Islands. Nestled in a remote corner of the archipelago, you will have an undisturbed view of the island group’s smallest island, Lítla Dímun from this settlement.

The village lies next to a picturesque sandy beach. Sandvík translates directly to ‘the sandy bay‘. You will see the waves lapping against the shore when sailing to and from Suðuroy Island with the 2 hour ferry. The ferry sails between Suðuroy Island and the capital, Tórshavn.

Sandvík offers visitors an incredible sense of peace and a front-row seat to the raw beauty surrounding it. Seeing the uninhabited Lítla Dímun rising from the ocean from this place is one of the highlights.

As you walk through Sandvík, you will see the small houses scattered across the settlement. The village’s peacefulness makes it an ideal stop for those looking to experience one of the most isolated small hamlets in the Faroe Islands.

Most travellers come to Sandvík to experience some nearby wonders. Once you are out of a mountain tunnel that links the settlement to the rest of Suðuroy Island, you will head west. This is where the top attractions are found.

Sandvík is the starting point for exploring the dramatic coastal scenery. An unpaved path will take you 2,5 km / 1,6 mi westward from the settlement. This is where you can walk the narrow wooden bridge leading to Rituskor. The bridge spans across a sheer gorge. You will get breathtaking views of Ásmundarstakkur Rock Pillar, a massive and solitary sea-stack rising boldly from the sea.
