Fámjin is a beautiful settlement in the far-flung Faroe Islands. Located on Suðuroy Island, this is the only inhabited spot nestled on the island’s rugged west coast.

This remotely located settlement overlooks the harsh North Atlantic Ocean. A stone reef protects most of Fámjin. You will see the reef at low tide. The route down the mountainside when entering the scattered houses in the settlement is remarkable. Houses here come in multiple colours.

An impressive natural scenery surrounds Fámjin. The island’s highest mountain, Gluggarnir, rises next to Fámjin. There are several inland lakes and waterfalls above the village.

On the hillside above Fámjin, you will find Lake Kirkjuvatn. This is one of the most lovely lakes in the Faroe Islands. Go to the place to get peace of mind and recharge.

Kirkjuvatn is a serene lake located in the heart of Suðuroy Island, just north of the island’s rugged west coast. Its name, meaning “Church Lake,” is fitting as the trail to the lake begins behind Fámjin’s picturesque church. The lake covers an area of 0.2 km².

To reach Kirkjuvatn, simply head to Fámjin and follow the path leading up from the church. The trail can be a bit steep in parts, but reaching the lake is well worth it. At a certain point when walking uphill, Lake Kirkjuvatn comes into view. Enjoy the undisturbed landscapes all ready to explore.

The Faroese flag was designed by the local student Jens Olivur Lisberg. He died young and is buried next to the church.
