Víkar

Víkar is an abandoned hamlet in the wild Faroe Islands. Located far away from nearby settlements on the airport island Vágar, this place comes with incredible views and a remote feeling to it all. You will hike in order to get to Víkar as there is no road to this place.
Getting here requires a quite long hike from the small settlement of Vatnsoyrar next to Lake Leitisvatn. The trailhead is located only few minutes from the airport in the Faroe Islands. There is no marked path along the route. Nevertheless, the grassy terrain is fairly gentle without much elevation.
Follow the river from Vatnsoyrar all the way to Lake Fjallavatn, which means “The Mountain Lake”. Lake Fjallavatn is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Faroe Islands and sits in amazing natural surroundings.
Finally, you will reach the breathtakingly beautiful scenery in Víkar. Reach new place to photograph the site every 5 minute as you find your way to the attraction.
Follow the River for Víkar Views
The river that you will follow to Víkar ends as a waterfall known as Reipsáfossur Waterfall. Standing next to the waterfall gives you a true sense of the power and beauty of nature.
This place is purified by salt winds that come in from the wild North Atlantic. People used to live in Víkar but left the place due to its remoteness. The abandoned settlement comes with fertile fields surrounded by mountains in all directions except to the north where you will see nothing but the wast ocean unfolding in front of your eyes.
There is still a village path from Víkar to the famous hamlet Gásadalur. This is another route to this place. Stone cairns will lead the way from Gásadalur to Víkar. The scenery along this route comes with endless vistas.
