Viðareiði Travel Guide

Viðareiði is the most northerly village in the far-flung Faroe Islands. Located on Viðoy Island, this is the main settlement on the island.

Visiting Viðareiði is always rewarding. The village lies between two impressive mountains which together form the land where all houses in the settlement are nestled.

Getting to Viðareiði

Despite its remote location in the northern part of the Faroe Islands, getting to the village is easy. Thanks to underwater tunnels, mountain tunnels and a causeway, it takes an hour or so to drive from the capital Tórshavn to Viðareiði.

Once on Viðoy Island, you will get to the settlement after driving through the mountain tunnel Viðareiðistunnilin. The tunnel comes with two lanes and when heading out of the tunnel, you immediately get a sense of the beauty of the place. This Viðareiði webcam shows you the road conditions just before you get to village.

There are several parking lots in the settlement. Make sure to find your spot and explore the elements. The fields around the houses are gentle so take your time and go for a stroll at your own pace.

This village is easy to reach all year round. You get a true sense of being far away in a very remote place when standing in the epic village.

The settlement has an iconic church. You can park right next to the white painted church that overlooks the breathtaking seascape.

Villagers have constructed a stonewall around the church as Faroe Islanders have done so many places around the archipelago. These stonewalls can be seen in even the smallest hamlets in the island group. All stones are gathered from the surrounding grass fields.
